Veterans for Life Foundation Brings Lasting Change to Guatemala

When a devastating earthquake struck Santa María de Jesús, Guatemala, in July 2025, Veterans for Life Foundation deployed its first Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to serve the community. What began as an emergency response has grown into something much deeper: long-term relationships, ongoing follow-up, and sustainable access to clean drinking water.

With support from The Sawyer Foundation, the team returned in December 2025 – January 2026 to continue serving families in Santa María de Jesús while expanding into a new community, San Pablo La Laguna. Rather than simply distributing water filters, the team focused on building trust with local leaders, strengthening partnerships, and equipping families with the knowledge needed to maintain their Sawyer Bucket Filters for years to come.

One memorable moment began months before the filters were ever distributed. During an earlier trip through San Pablo La Laguna, the team experienced car trouble on a quiet Sunday morning. A local mechanic spent hours repairing their vehicle but refused any payment. The team simply promised to return with a Sawyer Bucket Filter for his family. Six months later, they kept that promise—returning not with one filter, but with 42 systems for his family and neighbors. It was a powerful reminder that small acts of kindness often grow into opportunities to serve entire communities.

Throughout the project, the team distributed 210 Sawyer Bucket Filter systems, conducted five community training sessions, completed approximately 150 follow-up visits, and improved access to safe drinking water for an estimated 840 people across Guatemala.

Follow-up visits have already demonstrated encouraging results. One community leader shared that illness had begun spreading before the initial distribution. Six months later, every family consistently using their Sawyer filters remained symptom-free, reinforcing the value of pairing clean water technology with training and ongoing follow-up.

By strengthening relationships with community leaders and investing in training, Veterans for Life Foundation continues to demonstrate that lasting impact extends well beyond a single distribution.
