In Jamaica, following Hurricane Melissa, in partnership with the Sawyer Foundation, His 2nd Wave Outreach is pilot testing a more integrated disaster response model. In addition to providing immediate relief through filters and care packages, the emphasis is on structured follow-up through local church partners to ensure sustained engagement after initial distribution. This approach is helping evaluate what it looks like to combine emergency response with long-term relational support in a more intentional way.
The Sawyer filter served as the central entry point for engagement, allowing teams to build trust while meeting an immediate need for safe drinking water. From there, the model expanded into ongoing relational support, with multiple follow-up visits that included filter checks and continued engagement from local church partners. Mission mapping and basic data collection were also introduced to help track family needs and guide future outreach efforts. This combination of practical relief and structured follow-up is helping shape a more holistic and sustainable approach to disaster response.
